After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, he is befriended by a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas), and his siblings, including his little sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore), who keep it a secret and give it a place to stay in their home. Given the name "E.T." by the kids, he soon falls ill, resulting in government intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and E.T.
